Our all-new Mexico TEFL Internship – A complete guide

Ever dreamed of living and working in Mexico? Yep…us too. That’s why we’ve made it a possibility, by putting together an all-new Mexico TEFL Internship that will whisk you away to the land of tacos and tequila.

It aims to cover the whole shebang, taking you from unqualified to fully TEFL certified in a matter of weeks and then finishing up with a paid job placement in a real school. You could be making a wage and enjoying all the cultural delights of this incredible North American country before the month is through!

This guide will cover all the basics of the course. Look at it as a 101 on what’s included, what sort of experience you can expect, and where the myTEFL Mexico Internship can take you…

What is the myTEFL Mexico Internship?

We’ve aimed to create a package that will take you from a would-be TEFL teacher to a real TEFL pro in just a matter of weeks. More than that, we wanted to do it all on location, so that students could start experiencing the joys and excitement of this Latin land right from the get-go.

So, you’ll jet into Mexico and start studying for your TEFL qualification right away. That takes a month, during which there’s also time for salsa lessons and local music tuition. Once you’ve been awarded your teaching certificate, you can move on to phase two of the placement: A paid position as an English teacher in a local Mexican school.

What’s included in the myTEFL Mexico Internship?

This package includes everything you need to become a TEFL teacher and then some. In fact, it even guarantees a paid job as a TEFL teacher once you’ve finished your studies. Here’s are the main features:

  • 140-hour on-site TEFL course – This is the real meat of the course. You’ll join other trainee teachers to complete four weeks of training (more on that below).
  • Teaching placement – Don’t worry, we won’t leave you hanging once you’ve finished the training part. Certificate done and dusted, it’s time to move on to a paid teaching position in Mexico (more below).
  • Accommodation assistance – We know you’ll want to focus on getting your teaching skills ready for the new career, so this course includes accommodation for a fee of $150/month.

The TEFL course

The central feature of the Mexico Internship is the TEFL course. It’s a fully-fledged 140-hour course, one of the most comprehensive types you can get today, all taking place on-site in Mexico itself. The curriculum covers the whole gamut of teaching skills, from lesson planning all the way through to classroom management and communication skills.

There’s also an in-depth section on language skills to ensure all teachers are up to scratch with their own English grammar, whether that’s training in auxiliary verbs or parts of speech. And you get phonology training to help with the presentation of conversational language to learners.

However, what really sets this apart from the bulk of TEFL courses out there is the hands-on element. Being on the ground in Mexico itself means you can attend real-life classrooms to observe working EFL teachers. It also means the course benefits from proper teaching practice, where you’ll teach genuine students in genuine classes. It’s something that’s widely considered to be one of the holy grails of TEFL training and should set you apart from the crowd in any future interviews you have, whether in Mexico or not!

Why Mexico?

Why not? Mexico is one of the world’s most upcoming TEFL destinations. It’s got a huge and growing cohort of English learners, a booming tourism sector that needs consistent, high-quality English skills, and an increasing global role that means there’s plenty of demand for business English. But we don’t think you should choose it just because there are lots of job opportunities on the horizon…

We think you should choose it for the incredible place that it is. Mexico spans thousands of miles from the Caribbean Sea in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. During your time here, you can shorten the bucket list by seeing Chichen Itza in the Yucatan jungles, munching on tacos in family cantinas, and going whale watching in Puerto Vallarta.

There are incredible towns and cities, not least of all the altitudinous capital of Mexico City (known locally as CDMX). There, moody districts like Roma converge on the historic core of the town, where ancient Maya temples loom over Spanish plazas. And that’s really just a taster, because you can also see romantic place like Morelia, or buzzy colonial centers like San Miguel de Allende, or taste tequila in…well, Tequila itself!

It’s just a downright awesome place to be!

How much does the myTEFL Mexico Internship cost?

$1,495 is the total cost of the whole program. That’s for the TEFL course and its elements of hands-on teaching, the placement, accommodation assistance (though accommodation itself is $150/month on top), and consistent student support throughout. We also offer a discount of $200 to people who book at least two months in advance, and $100 to those who book at least a month in advance, so it’s worth bagging your place ASAP if you can.

The paid teaching placement

The endgame of the myTEFL Mexico Internship is a real TEFL position in a real school in Mexico. That’s right, you won’t have to mess around looking for jobs once you’ve finished the training portion of the program. We place you straight into one of our partner schools so you can get working.

Pay is typically between $500-800 USD/month. That might not sound like loads by US standards, but money goes a whole load further south of the border. It’s usually enough for teachers to live comfortably and even travel a little.

Job placements are mainly in Mexican state schools, usually involving 25-30 contact hours per week between Monday and Friday. However, we also place graduates in business English positions and in one-on-one tutoring positions with adult learners, so there’s plenty of scope to teach in different sectors of the TEFL industry.

Tempted by the prospect of living in Mexico? We can see why! Be sure to get in touch or read more on our Mexico Internship page if this sounds like the course for you…
